Is canyoning very dangerous?
Canyoning isn’t any more dangerous than mountain climbing or driving your car.
Of course there is a set of rules that need to be followed. Even then there is a residual risk since canyoning is an outdoor sport.
Therefore it is advisable for beginners to only enter an unknown gorge with a guide.
What requirements does one need to fulfil for canyoning?
Good health, a safe step and the knowledge of how to swim. When going in gorges without a guid the knowledge rope, mountain and safety techniques is essential.
In the case of a poor swimmers there are generally life vest being carried
What’s the best time?
During a high pressure weather period it doesn’t matter when. Before entering the gorge you should take into account the length of the passage so you won’t enter the night. During a unstable weather period (changing weather fronts or possible thunderstorms) in the alps it is important to finish the tour by 2 pm. The gorges can usually be entered from Mai till September or October.
What difficulties could we expect?
gorge is split into 6 degrees of difficulty. From easy to extremely difficult (here you can use the benchmarks from the alpinism). Additional information about technical cridieria (a, b and c) and the engagement (I-IV)
What do I need?
Apart from the equipment (which is provided on guided tours) you only need swimming trunks, a towel, some courage, the appetite to experience something out of the ordinary and an affection for nature.
What do I experience in the gorge?
Mostly crystal clear water, different kinds of water currents, waterfalls, natural slides and the feeling of being free as well as a part of nature. The flora and fauna exists in a vast variety.
What does one need to bear in mind when entering the gorge?
Every gorge has its own set of rules, which have to be followed by every canyonist. Every gorge guide usually has a gorge which he cares for. He will also make arrangements with the owners concerning the car park and the entrance. Furthermore one has to bear in mind the over all and the local weather. The kind of rock and the catchment area will give you information about the dangerous during thunderstorms (water level)
What to do if something happens?
The gorge guide education is given by the mountain sports guide association and a main point of the course consists of different mountain techniques. Most canyoning guides also are mountain guides, mountain rescuer, wild water rescuer and paramedic. In some counties it is also pushed to do the course for canyon rescuer. Well equipped gorges already have fixed spots for the rescue services as well as numerous emergency exits.
